Tour the hill – Nob, that is / Historic homes open doors for Junior League event – SFGate

Just met the owner of this timeless classic single family home on Nob Hill at 1021 California St and Mason Street.

The six-story, 5,200-square-foot home was designed by George A. Shastey, the original designer of the Fairmont Hotel’s interiors. He called it a “petit palais” and emphasized details like the intricate crown moldings, traceried grillwork, gilded vaults and leaded glass ceilings. Viewed from Huntington Park across the street, the home still looks like a mini-mansion, resting quietly amid the giant apartment buildings that flank it.

Stephens says it was originally built by a bachelor to house his mistress, and there is allegedly a tunnel running underneath California Street that connects the home to the old James Flood mansion, now the Pacific Union Club.
